| Hi Ladies Has anyone ever tried a low/lower carb diet like the Zone, Adkins, Low GI foods, or Somersizing (Susan Somers) If so how did it go for you? Thoughts good or bad about these types of diets??? Thanks in advance!! _________________ He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast. ~Proverbs

| I did South Beach and did well as long as I didn't stray. I didn't make it a lifestyle change and gained all the weight back. That is the key. Whatever you do it has to be a lifestyle change.
My sister, bil and a friend of mine did Atkis and lost lots of weight but also did not treat it as a lifestyle change and gained it plus some back.
The doctors told me moderation on everything is the key and continue it for life. _________________ Vicki

| I also lost weight with Atkins, however, like most others I strayed back to eating carbs and regained the weight. I'm now working on getting back to a more balanced weight loss plan like WW, limiting white carbs in favor of multigrains and the complex carbs in vegetables. I also need to address portion size and exercise. I want to lose about 35 pounds to lower the amount of medication I take for athsma and high blood pressure. So far this week I have traded 2% milk for cream in my coffee and made all my meals at home with an eye to portion control. Wish me Luck! _________________ Dear Lord, help me remember how lucky I am on both the good and the bad days! |

| I went to the doctors today and he wants me to start on Atkins. I am not sure how I feel about this. I know it has to be a lifestyle change but not sure if I am willing to do that for life. I need to lose 40 pounds. He also said he wants me to exercise a little each day but I have to be real careful for the next 3 weeks because of my heel spur. He gave me a shot but said to baby it for 3 weeks so that it heals. _________________ Vicki

| Well, I don't know about the Atkins diet.... I am with you, Vicki, I NEED to lose weight as well. I am unhealthy. I thought you started WW again? I am planing on starting again after Christmas. Would it help to do it together? Post our menus like we did before? I know teamwork helps! Let me know what you think! I will be praying for you! Good luck:) |

| Thanks Kim. Yes teamwork does help and I only lasted 1 day on the restart. It just seems like I have to control how and where we spend our money, I have to control the kids, I have to control everything and well I guess food was one of the things I didn't have to control. I guess that is how I ended up gaining weight. The doctor wants me to cut out my breads, flours, cereals, pastas etc.. that is why he said Atkins. I am checking into the sommersizing also. We can work together and hopefully as a team we will both succeed. _________________ Vicki

| Do these things you like have to be cut out completely? Or can you still take some in moderation by cutting them back and taking smaller portions? I know it's hard with some 'comfort' type foods as that's when you feel deprived. Like Teri switching to milk in her coffee, we began using semi-skimmed milk instead of full-cream a few years ago, I cannot take full-cream anymore as it tastes too rich now. DH stopped adding milk to tea altogether. We stopped using white bread in favour of wholemeal or multi-grain, I don't eat a lot of bread anyway. DS complains about the bread though. We don't eat a lot of fruit...tsk...tsk...should really put more effort into that. Some 'diets' seem such a drastic change and I would imagine hard to stick with.
Good luck with everyone's weightloss plans. _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| | I am with Skin....even if a person just cuts back and does "better" then they should still lose! We are FLAT broke right now too...so maybe we should just make commitments to eat on a smaller plate at supper ( I've been doing this and it does work! )....and making a plan for eating in the day with a variety of foods...not s "strict" diet, but something that doesn't incluse a ton of junk and serving sizes fit for a man....that's my problem...I eat as much as DH even though he's MUCH bigger than I am...a little less than a foot taller than me! ....does that sound more reasonable, Vicki? I know that any "diet" costs sooo much $! |

| I am not sure what I will be doing. I know portion control is a must regardless of what I do. I have found in the past several years that in order for me to lose weight I really must cut out alot of my carbs such as potatoes, pastas, etc.. whenever these items are in my diet I don't lose weight. I also know that I must exercise. I also know that whatever I do if it takes too much effort I won't follow through. I guess I am just lazy. Anyway I am not making any decisions right now as I am still reading things. Kim - we are also flat broke so whatever I do it will have to be done cheaply! _________________ Vicki

| | I hear ya! So, here's what I am doing...in the morning I am going to plan everything I will eat for the day...measure food (this will save $ too! )....and know I will not to an exersise plan, so I need to plan avtivities that are useful (like getting chores done...hauling wood..etc...) for my exersise. I have NEVER stuck with videos or a real "plan" for exersise...but if work needs to be done, I do it. So, I will ask DH if I can help him more..and make an effort to not set thing down...put them away wich will lead to more trips upstairs...so...this should be cheap...we'll see! Good luck Vicki!! Let me know what you plan to do so we can motivate each other. I remeber quite a few of us did this in the years past and we did well! I lost 35 lbs before when we posted menus and such....maybe we'll all be able to lose again! |

| Looks like I will start the Atkins like the doctor said. I have done nothing but read and collect info for the past few days so hopefully this will work. I will add a little exercise in 5 days a week also with Rachel being my accountability partner. _________________ Vicki

| | Vicki,..are you counting carbs?Did your doctor say how many to take in in a days time?My husbands diabetes class said for a man he should have no more than 65 carbs per meal. For a woman Im sure it would be a little less.Just curious on what the doctors advice was. |

| Not really counting carbs per say but following the Atkins program which only allows 20 carbs for the 1st 2 weeks and then I believe you start adding in an additional 5 carbs a week so that you can see how many carbs your body can handle without gaining weight _________________ Vicki
