| Ok, let me start at the very beginning. My oldest sister, who is 15 years older than I, has ALWAYS been off & on Weight Watchers, so you can say that I have almost grown up with those two words around me!! Because she still has a weight problem (going up & down all her life, as have I), and she has recently joined again, i never thought it would really work for me. I don't particularly like having to count "points" or calories etc. but I guess counting points is NOT like counting points so that's better. Also, years ago, on WW, you needed to weigh all your food, so I didn't realize til recently that that also has changed. In any case, speeding up to the present, my neighbor & best girlfriend, has recently joined WW, and has lost 4 pounds in a week!! (she's been very discipling, & very good, and even has a pedometer & walks 10,000 steps everyday!!!)....in other words, she's been inspiring me!!!! Anywho, I've been seriously thinking of joining her next week for a meeting, and then possibly joining month by month. it's sounding very appealing NOW (to me), despite not being very appealing to me in the past. so, again anyway, can anyone here say anything else to encourage (or discourage) me about this idea of mine? i always thought I could lose weight for FREE, so having to pay for "help" is iffy to me. though I am willing to do that for my health (a good investment). I can't get a point calculator/slide unless I join, right? plus, I'm thinking that i really need the motivational meetings!!!! What do you all think? _________________

| From experience the WW program is great. I too struggled with the idea of paying to lose weight so I did the At home program. Worked well for me but others faired better going to the weekly meetings. WW is not a good choice for me however because I tend to use my points on the non-healthy foods and overdo the carbs. Carbs are my weakness and well once I start I can't stop. As with any program you have to be comitted and want to make it a lifestyle change and not just a diet to lose weight or when you come off the weight will come back on. I think you would do well on it Cheapy. I say go for it and we all will be here routing for you!! _________________ Vicki

| Thanks everyone! You all sound as though you've had good experiences with it!! (BTW, I meant cointing points is not like counting calories in my previous post!! ) Yes, I DO think I need the weekly meetings as incentive/motivation....don't like the thought of getting weighed every week, but oh well....it would be worth it just to get a pep talk!! As for the money, i could spend ,whatever it is, $40 a month on other stuff like an extracurricular activity for the kids, etc., so why not this? I guess I just need to get used to committing on something just for ME. Like I said, an investment in my own health. Thanks for the encouragement!!! I will let you all know how this works out for me!!! _________________

| I know last year at my old job, it was arranged for a WW representative to come into work for any employees who wished to join the program, I think there may have been a discounted price for a group joining. I'd considered it but didn't in the end. Several ladies did and, with the exception of one, all lost weight, a couple quite a bit and they looked great. The meetings & weigh-ins were held each week at work so it was convenient for most who could organize lunchbreaks around it....it was a good idea for all those who took part. One lady's husband lost weight also simply by following what she was doing so they basically had 2 for the price of 1! She also used a pedometer. Good luck cheapy...I hope it works for you...I'm not disciplined enough to stick with things so I would've wasted my money _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| That's what my sister's workplace does, has someone from WW come to the workplace once a week for weigh-ins & such....I think that's why she joined (again). It was almost like she had no excuse not to, if they were going to "come to her". also, skin, you made me remember (jogged my memory, so to speak) that I may just get some kind of a "discount" for WW through my health insurance company....it's an HMO (Health Maintenance Org.) so they give discounts for certain things like gym memberships, health programs, etc. I think I'm going to look into that right away!! Then there would be absolutely NO excuse for me not to!!! As for your weight, skin, you look PERFECT!! I've seen the pics you've posted, & you look great!!! no need for any weight loss for you!!! Thanks again all...I'm going to need all the help I can get!!! _________________

| Thanks for saying so cheapy but, I do need to be careful because I'm so short. My family tend to put weight on very easily, my younger sister, while taller than me, is quite large (gained with each pregnancy & never lost between), my Mum has gone up and down a lot over the years. I'm really aiming to maintain my current weight (i.e. not gain) and trying to control my supersweet tooth Believe me, that's a struggle I need at least one 'chocolate fix' every day!
I forgot to add before that my work colleague whose husband also followed her program had everything in her cupboards labelled with points...she was VERY committed...she wasn't really much overweight to begin with...but wanted to lose excess pounds.
Also, I wanted to add, I believe exercise proves very beneficial in helping with weight-loss progress. I really did NOT change my eating habits and still lost lbs with all the physical activity with my current job (I hadn't been aiming for this but was pleased as I'd been stuck for some years, although I wasn't really trying much!). It's sooooooooo easy to be lazy when it comes to exercise, I'm lucky I'm getting so much at work So if healthy eating (I hate the word diet, it feels so....depriving....lol) were combined with exercise it would greatly improve results. I suppose the trick would be to find some form of exercise that is enjoyed in order to follow through... _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| I'm short, too, skin, so I REALLY know what you mean about that one!! ALL the women in my family have been short, and shall I say "stocky", no small body frames here!! we may be short, but we have more of a medium-body-frame if you ask me....none of us is "frail", even when we're at our thinnest. I also know what you mean about the sweet tooth~Aaaaarrrrgh I do so love sugar~ I find that people are usually "salty" people or "sweets" people (sometimes both...those VERY unlucky ones! )...I happen to be one of the 'sweet" ones, and that's bad enough when temptation comes knocking!! I find it hard to excersize these days cuz I'm always so tired from my work days~ I chase little ones around all day & i'm exhausted when they go home. hopefully I will get a pedometer (figure out how to use it!!...Miss technically-inclined, that I am!) and actually do well with "10,000 steps a day" plan!!! to me!! _________________

| CHeapy - My favorite pedometer comes from www.bodytronics.com. I dont have a fancy one either. I think I paid $25.00 for 2 of them. I have recommended them to others and they all are quite pleased with the product also. Just thought I'd throw that out there so you dont waste your money. I have gone through so many from Walmart and Kmart and different brands.
I am one of the ones who crave salty and sweet. If I have something salty then I immed want something sweet and when I eat something sweet I crave something salty. It is an ongoing battle and I guess that is why I have gained the weight I have. _________________ Vicki

| Thanks for the advice on the pedometers, Vicki!! I will look into the bodytronics ones asap. My best girlfriend/neighbor has the WW one (their new one for 2007) and it tracks your points for you,too...she loves it. She had a cheapo one before that wouldn't stay put, & kept resetting itself on it's own for some reason; useless. The WW one was $24.99 ,so I thought maybe I would try getting it cheaper on ebay, or looking into the one you like is also a wonderful idea....thanks again! Oh, & BTW, my health plan only gives $150 off of a yearly plan at WW. Geesh....I was trying to figure that out, and assuming the WW yearly plan costs around $400, then that's $150 off that, and well, I don't think that's so great. I just want to deal with a month to month plan....which I understand is $39.95. That way I can "commit" monthly, but it's not such a big deal, and i can cancel at anytime. _________________

Vicki, do you happen to know what your pedometer is called? I went to the website & there are just SO many to choose from!! Though the least expensive one just counts "steps", and that what i'm looking for, not miles, just steps.
Also, you & Gayla, poor things!!! Sweet & salty people?? Yikes!! That makes me glad I'm just a sweets person, only half the bad foods to trigger me!! Potato chips don't tempt me in the least, lucky me... _________________

| kim, A bunch of us at work did South Beach all at the same time and the first two weeks were tough. That is when you cut your carbs drastically. Carbs make you feel good and happy so by the end of week 1 we were all VERY grouchy. One woman had leg pain and one of the doctors bought her orange juice and told her to drink it every day. It was somehow related but I don't remember why. Besides that we all lost weight. Those of us who stopped the diet gained the pounds back. It was difficult figuring out what to eat for breakfast for me because I've been a toast girl my entire life!
So that's my experience. I would try it again but I don't think it's something I could do for life.
Vicki - what's your experience been like? |
