| Ladies, can I please ask for the help of all your powerful praying for DS who had an accident at work this morning, we've been at the hospital all day, it's now after midnight and we're going back first thing in the morning, DS is still on a trolley in emergency as they had no ward beds. He caught his hand in a drop saw and has lost most of the back portion of the top half of his right index finger, it's all gone down to the bone. They can't even repair anything as there's a huge chunk gone. They told him there's an 80% chance he'll lose the top half of his finger and he's devastated. He's just begun teaching himself to play guitar these last weeks and loves it, he bought himself a guitar and guide book, he really broke his heart...they didn't sugar-coat the situation at all. He is also in much pain and has to wait until tomorrow for surgery with no guarantees it will actually happen. A second doctor looked at it after several hours, along with the initial doctor, he gave him 2 'possible' options.
#1 They could simply amputate it and be done with it. #2 They could attempt to salvage it (no guarantees) by taking a portion of his middle finger and grafting skin from his fore-arm, stitching the fingers together for 3 weeks and hope for the best.
Obviously he's hoping they can manage the 2nd option, he wants to try to save as much of the finger as possible. He's been told that they may not be able to go with option 2 and to be prepared to come out of theatre with the top amputated. I'm so upset for him, I'm praying for a little miracle. Your prayers will be much appreciated. I'll update when I know more, I better get to bed, it's almost 1am and I want to be there in the morning again, for whatever time surgery might end up being. _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| Ladies...a miracle today!
He was taken to theatre shortly after 9am and returned to a ward bed before 2pm. He slept soundly until around 5pm when we had a few words with him and nipped home for an hour or two to feed the dogs and freshen up. We found it hard to find anyone to fully explain the surgery but as we were leaving, one lovely doctor (not the hand surgeon), offered to read his notes and explain what they 'had' managed to do today. He said he was aware of the plans as it had been discussed in a meeting early in the morning before surgery. The notes also included a diagram of how it looked before repair attempts. *** If you're squeamish, don't read further *** There was an incision made down the side of his middle finger. The fleshy pulpy bit from the top half of that finger was stretched to also cover the top half of the index finger then stitched in place. So basically both fingers are sharing the top half of the middle finger. Skin was grafted from his inner arm to cover were necessary. A portion of bone had been sliced off but was minimal. The nail bed was still intact. He has kept the length of the index finger (which will hugely relieve him) although he'll never have a job as a hand model! The doctor said he's a very lucky boy, he still has the length although these fingers will be quite thinner. DS will be relieved, but I know he'll be in a lot of pain when all sedation wears off. He will obviously have to face some further procedures but aparently all went well today and I hope everything knits up okay. The hand surgeon has really done his best to save the finger and we cannot ask for more than that. I know it will takes weeks and weeks, if not months, of healing if all goes according to plan. Thank you all so much for your prayers and best wishes, there were several said in Ireland also! We're hoping he can come home tomorrow, we're popping back down to see him tonight again but probably will only stay an hour or so, we'd been there all day again. At this stage we're unsure if we'll be having our mini holiday next week now but we'll see what the weekend brings. Thanks so much again, as I said before, a miracle today! _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |
