I have rented and owned and currently renting to own. There are pros and cons to both. What I like with renting is the owner is responsible for the repairs and upkeep. Downfall is they can tell you to get out when they want and they can up the rent when they want. I am very torn between the too. I know renting is easier for me however I love have my own home with no one to tell me what I can and cant do! So I chose 2 answers

I own and I love it!! Very Happy It was my dream....really, my dream....and it came true!!
I grew up in rented apartments with my parents, and rented for the first 14 years of my marriage, and I definitely, no-doubt-about-it prefer owning, to renting.
There's insecurity with renting, and a certain uneasiness I always felt about the place not really being "mine", I had to deal with absentee landlords who never wanted to be bothered to fix anything, and also landlords who lived in the same house and were like overseers who watched our every move and eavesdropped on our conversations and didn't want us to a make a sound, nor have visitors, and complained...instead of being happy that they had a decent family renting their apartment. Also, I had to deal with living in a two-family house with a drug dealer and people who were up all night with their TV blasting & their 3-yr.-old running back & forth across the length of the apt., and jumping off of furniture at 1 and 2 o'clock in the morning. Slamming doors and clogging the sink in the basement, also letting their 3-yr.-old make such a mess with the water during his bath, that the water would leak through my ceiling. Oh yeah, renting was NOT fun for me!! Mad I am SO much happier now, and our house is our castle, soon to be totally paid off (well. 10 yrs. or less!!) and even though I still have unfriendly neighbors, I literally don't have to live with them!! Laughing

I ticked 'own' but that won't be 100% true until our mortgage has been paid out. I imagine there are pros and cons to both but my preference would be owning as we can call the shots and aren't living by someone elses rules.
Yes renting means you have no repair expenses but I see our home as an investment for the future. Any repairs or improvements are done how 'we' want them done. We are fortunate to have great neighbours which makes life much easier but usually that's the luck of the draw for everyone!
We now own a fair portion of our home (60-65%) because luckily we bought around two years before house values sky-rocketed where we live....PHEW...not only have house prices increased beyond many peoples affordability but rents have increased as well!
I took out my first mortgage at age 21 (when I was single), sold that house around 5 years later and took out a joint mortgage with DH, we've moved a few times for various reasons but each time with property value increases and repairs/renovations we'd done, we made a profit which also helped fund our emigration. So 'owning' has proved beneficial to us and we both work so I'd rather pay a mortgage (which I see as an investment) as pay rent to someone else!
I appreciate that not everyone has that option though.

I picked other because we have rented for years and have had some really bad neighbor experiences. Before we moved this last time we were living in the midst of gun shooting drug dealers (very scary)! We would rather rent or own a little cottage in the country somewhere--now that would feel like home!

We own a small house but would like something larger. Alas, that is not in the cards right now. Owning can be frustrating at times to be sure. We had some drug dealers move in two doors down from us and the traffic was ridiculous! My husband kept finding crack pipes in our front yard. They have moved on (thankfully) but the house still has the reputation and the tenants (it's a two family) keep moving in and out at a rapid rate.

I own my home.
I couldnt stand knowing that I was paying for my landlord's big truck any longer (in a crappy part of Akron).
I got in while the interest rates were low 3 years ago, and I'm locked in.

I also hated knowing that I'd have to move again while renting.

My house payment is less than what I was paying in college while in an expensive area, but the same as the crap-hole I was living in near the University of Akron.

I am pleased with my decision... always have been.
