I give alot to the Salvation Army & the St. Vincent De Paul Society(both religious organizations).
The Salvation Army drop-off center(& thrift shop, as a matter of fact)is fairly close to us. We drop-off a load & shop in the thrift shop right after! Just for clothing for hubby & me.
The St. Vincent De Paul society brings a large truck into our church's parking lot twice a year, and is a BIG help in clearing out old clothes for us.
Sometimes I DO give to friends, but only if I know they need it, want it,appreciate it, etc. Unfortunately my friends & family are way too "proud" or shall I say "snooty" and look down upon the hand-me-downs. Hubby & I are the only ones I actually "know" who shop in the Savation Army thrift shop. And WE love it!! Hubby has found wonderful, barely used LLBean & Lands End shirts there, and dress pants & ties for work. I, myself, have found a few classic pairs of khaki pants, and a cardigan I wear all the time. It's hit or miss, but if you stick to the classics & know what you're looking for, it's great!!
Sometimes I get too overwhelmed, & toss things out. But not that much. Just junky toys of the kids. Or pieces of toys, etc. My kids are getting older now, so there's really not many toys left to discard....everything intact I've decided to keep for memory's sake. (My attic could really use a good thorough organizing!! Rolling Eyes pale )...it's probably not as bad as some, but there is definitely room for improvement. I think I will make it a New Year's resolution! Wink

I had to tick 4!
If something's broken or not worth passing on I trash it. I give to friends who won't be offended, amazingly some are when offered! I also donate to thrifty/charity stores. I had 1 garage sale which was alright except we were left with items that I definitely thought were good cheap buys. These I sold on ebay when I learned how to work it...lol. I sold an electric kettle & toaster, floor tiles, DS's clothing, my clothes, all items left from garage sale. Go figure!!! I also sold off DS's collection of BEANO/DANDY annuals on ebay amongst other no longer needed household bits and pieces.

Do lots of you use freecycle? How does it work?

I too give lots of the kids clothes away. As for mine and Dh...they are not fit for use when we are done with them..lol..they are mostly used to start with, so when we are done they usually go to his shop for rags. We donate some clothes to thrift stores when they are given to us and don't fit anyone. There are so many different ways to get rid of stuff...and some goes to the dump. Mostly old toys with parts lost or broken.

The freecycle in Akron turned out to be a joke.
I gave them my name and address - and then got hundreds of spam e-mail. I told the moderator about it - and I have seen no change.

So I gave up.

Maybe next time.

free cycle here is a bit of a joke too... but alot of people know who has what and usually people get what they need ... example a woman moving into an house after leaving an abusive husband our local Priest came here and spoke to us we gave her beds and other things Father called today and James and John took a set of bunk beds to a family that suddenly has custody of two small nephews the boys stopped at another house and got several bags with things for the boys every one here helps when they can

We have given a few things over the years to some friends who are very low income like us and they love that. The rest we donate to Goodwill. Most of the people we know would be horrified at the thought of used items.Rolling Eyes

Gayla, your community sounds wonderful! I love it when different churches work together to help others. We are all on this journey together, so why not help each other out?
