| We had to turn the heat on last week. I have it set on 66 but not without complaints from everyone. Once dh inspects the chimney I will be using the wood stove. It is located downstairs so hopefully that will help some and I can set the temp lower.
During the summer I had the temp set on 75 and they complained about that also. Next summer I am hoping to be able to leave it at 77. _________________ Vicki

| | Our heat is on 67 and our air was on 78 all summer. The big factor with us is our fish. Their water temp has to be in a certain range or the coral and fish die. |

| | We try to keep ours at 65 and we use afghans and sweaters. My MIL hates to visit because she says it's too cold. When she comes we turn the heat up but higher than 70 is too darn hot for us and she still thinks it's cold. |

| If it were up to me, the heater would be set to 55 at the highest. BUT, because my fiance fiddled with the new thermostat (with timer), he has it come on at 4:30 in the morning to go up to 65, and then turn off by 7:30 (a half hour before we both leave for work). Then, it comes on 15 minutes before we get home from work.
On the weekends, we will use the kerosene heater. Seeing as I am home alone tonight, I turned the heater down - and turned on the kerosene heater. We ran it about 10 times within the past month - and are still on our first 5 gallon gas can($15 to fill it up). So it is worth it to us.
We are already using our electric blanket :-). |

| I was thinking about turning the thermostat down to 60 at night and getting us all electric blankets. Would that be cheaper?? _________________ Vicki

| We burn wood and coal...so I don't really have to set my thermostat at anything We can't even come close to being able to afford heating this big old house with propane!!!!!

| When I dog-sat last year for my mom- her gift to me was an electric blanket. For my double bed, at WalMart, it was $60.00.
Todd has a queen sized bed that he will be moving in this weekend (we are doing the move...again. Last time, we had a huge arguement and he moved his bed out) and the blankets are about $100.
I dont think 60 is that low. I think a few extra blankets on the beds would do the trick. My house is set for 55 at night, and that STILL isnt that bad (not enough for your nose to be cold).
So I guess to answer your question - it is expensive initially if that's what you want to do.

| We set ours to 64-66 in the day(I'm home w/little kids), 60-62 at night..
My kids are always complaining that they are cold, but they are healthy & survive from year to year!! (I'm funny!) I tell them "That's what clothes are for!!" and tell them to wear sweat jackets or sweat shirts. They also tend to walk around the house with their fleece blankets~ I am usually warm, but I throw on a fleece jacket if I get cold & when I'm sitting watching TV, I use a throw quilt.
In summer, we only have an AC in the living room, which only gets turned on if it's over 90 degrees out. And shut off at night before bed. Yes, on extremely hot, humid nights we suffer, but it's all temporary.Ususally here in New England the weather changes from day to day, so we get temperature relief every few days. (in both summer and winter).
I am just SO thankful that we have a roof over our heads, a home to raise my children...that it's mind over matter when it comes to house temperature!!! |

| oh, and we all use a layer of a fleece blanket & comforters at night in bed. Well, the kids do...just a comforter for me & Hubby(body heat is wonderful, isn't it?), and a flannel duvet over our comforter in winter. However, when we got a new bed over the summer, it's now queen sized as opposed to our old one which was full-sized. So now we only have one set of sheets for our bed. I think our full-sized comforter will still fit though. |

| Well after reading this and seeing where I said I was going to change my thermostat to 77 I did just that. I had it set on my normal 75 until I read this post. I am sure they will complain as DH says it is too warm in here and upstairs it is about 10 degrees warmer so the girls will complain also. Oh well. I need to save where I can save. Right? I see the temps are going down to the 70's after Monday so I will turn the air off again. _________________ Vicki

| DH advised me not to get an electric blanket for DS when I'd suggested it as he'd leave it on ALL night, he's done this with his a/c too. We surrendered to our first electric blanket last year but had to replace it this year as DH's side stopped working (it's dual control which is great). Previously I just used hot water bottles which I find great. I'm currently using my hot water bottle if sitting watching t.v. or reading with extra clothing and a throw rug over me. We'll only resort to using the heat as a last resort (or if we have company...lol). I'm not sure but I reckon it's cheaper for DH and I to use the electric blanket to heat the bed and turn it off shortly after getting in than heating the whole room using the a/c unit. We're snug-as-bugs-in-rugs at night with the quilt and furry blanket on top! Wearing extra layers and having extra weight (in blankets, etc) on the bed works very effectively I find. _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| Last week, our house was up to 81 degrees. Todd was miserably hot - so he turned on some fans. I was just about comfortable.
I am getting used to the electric bill being $50 less than in the winter, so I refuse to turn on the air just yet.
