I have quite a few old plain coloured cushion covers and I'd thought of maybe updating them (or jazzing them up a bit) by sewing doilies onto the fabric. I was dropping a few bags of 'clear outs' off at the local charity shop today and, as usual, browsed. They had such a range of doilies, I could hardly believe it! Some were mixed colours and unusual shapes, but I refrained from buying today (very unlike me!..lol). I'll pop back next week perhaps after I've cleared out a little more and maybe pick up a few then. They'd even be nice sewn onto extra pillowcases! They'd make a great contrast against darker fabrics.

Dancing Feather,
What isn't your sewing machine doing that makes it inoperational? One of my hobbies is buying and fixing old sewing machines. Some are beyond me but there is a great sewing machine repair place off 139 in Stougton MA. I can't imagine life without at least one sewing machine!

I use my great grannies Singer treadle sewing machine, purchased 2nd hand in 1912 for 8 pounds sterling (according to the Singer receipt!). My gran passed it to me as my mum never used it and DH has replaced the belt on it twice. It's noisy but I love it, my gran used it a lot in the 1940s when money was tight, she made clothes for Mum, my aunt and uncle and also made new clothes for their toys at Christmas time. In the drawers it still has all the original attachments and an instruction book which I've never read, I just use the basic sewing...lol...I'm more of a knitter but it's great for repairs, zips and curtains and quilt seams and hems. Plus it's working its way through the family Very Happy

Hi Teri,

My sewing machine is over 30 years old. It was handed down to me in the 80's when I was just learning to sew. It's never been a great machine. I've heard that Kenmore was a great name at the time but this sewing machine has always had problems (which is why my mother gave it to me and went back to her White). No matter how often I have it cleaned and serviced, the bobbin assembly causes problems (it knots, pulls fabric in etc). And I can't release the needle when I load the bobbin with thread. They keep telling me that it's fixed but so far I've never seen evidence of that.

My in-laws live in Stoughton - where is this machine repair place? I'd be willing to bring it in the them to see what they have to say.

I just got word that we ARE getting bonuses this year (1st paycheck in April will include them)! I would love to get a new simple machine that has an arm for cuffs. But I don't want to spend a gazillion dollars either. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for?
