PostSubject: New Roof   Wed 13 Feb 2008, 9:12 am

Todd and I knew when we moved into the house that it needed a new roof. Todd "patched" up some spots that were leaking in the fall, and we were waiting to see if it worked or not. We were sitting on the couch last weekend, and water just came through the roof in the corner.

He has been dreading putting on a new roof this Spring. We figured it'd cost us $3,000 for the materials alone. And almost a month for him to do it himself.

Well, I talked him into getting quotes from professionals. The quotes ranged from $5800-$9000! We checked the BBB, and are going with the $5800 one. I would rather have a professional do it, and they guarentee their work for 5 years. It would be 30 year shingles.

We have to give them 1/2 on Friday, and they will start after the gutters are thawed. Yippee!

I hate paying the money, but it is a 30 year investment. Plus, it will allow us to do what we've been wanting to do inside the house to the walls and ceilings. It will also give Todd alot more time to work on the other projects around the house.

Wish us luck that nothing too terribly bad happens!
We had termite problems (we found out), so they may need to replace some wood. Hopefully it's not too bad.

Sometimes hiring a professional is cheaper in the long run. I always look for companies that are members of the BBB, too. If anything happens like the roof leaks two years from now, you have a guarantee that the company will fix it and you won't have to do the work yourself.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I think you've both made a good choice having it fixed professionally and also having a few quotes to choose from. I know it saves lots of money to 'do-it-yourself' but some things are better left to the experts, not to mention the peace of mind with warranty/guarantees.

Your lucky that Todd is so handy around the home, my DH is the same (& wants to do it all) but it's tough finding the time to do everything that needs doing especially around work hours. Sometimes he's just too tired and things never seem to get finished, but I'm guilty of this too Embarassed

I hope you don't have any more leaks before the replacement! Smile

Ya know M,,my husband is handy wround the house also,,we hardly ever hire out a job but he absolutly hates,,I mean HATES to do roofing!LOL,If he has to do it,,then he will..so I think hiring out the job was a wise chioce..for the investment reasons ..also the roofers have to guaranteee their work,,so any leaks,,they have to repair at no cost.Smart choice!
