PostSubject: JANUARY ORGANIZING - One Bedroom   Tue 01 Jan 2008, 4:06 am

We agreed to spend our first month (of our new monthly organizing thread) on ONE BEDROOM. We've over 4 weeks to do one room so we can take it one drawer, one shelf or one closet at a time! Very Happy

This thread is for posting tips, ideas, links, progress and encouragement.
Hopefully by the end of the month we will have successfully decluttered and organized one room completely cheers

It's easy to get distracted with other rooms but please try to stay on the BEDROOM TOPIC only, we will devote other months to other rooms throughout the house.

TIME TO START ORGANIZING.... bounce

Scarves & Ties:

Attach a heavy string (or curtain wire!) across a side-wall or inside door of the closet. Drape ties or scarves across the length of the string.

Use clothes-pins across a hanger to hang lightweight scarves.

Get a thin dowel rod, slide wooden curtain rings along it, attach to the side of the closet and drape scarves through the rings.

Belts:

Attach a kitchen utensil rack (or expanding/accordian mug rack) to a side-wall or inside door of the closet. Use the hooks to hang belts (or even necklaces or bras).

Screw cup-hooks to the bottom of a wooden hanger and hang belts from the hooks.

I read a great tip (can't remember where now) which suggested placing a box (e.g. shoe-box) inside a drawer and using it to store smaller underwear items like bras etc...or using drawer dividers in underwear drawers for socks, pants etc....

Well I had an empty, unused shoebox which I inserted into the top drawer of my small beside chest today. I got all of my bras and folded each one over, tucking each cup behind the other then tucking the straps behind then I stacked them into the shoebox from front to back in order of whites, skintones, colours and blacks to the back....

WOW...believe me, this was so much tidier and freed up drawer space...even in a small drawer. The shoe-box was just over half the width of the drawer. I can recommend this tip, pass it on to teenage girls!

I'd already used this set of drawers for undies and socks but I'm beginning to go through it again, getting rid of what is past it's best and trying to organize it better!

I have another larger shoe-box....hmmmmm..... Razz

Why spend money on new drawer dividers when you can frugally improvise cheers

OH! Almost forgot...another tip I read (which makes sense) is to keep nothing in a bedroom which doesn't belong in it or get used in the room. It's probably best to quickly declutter before re-organizing so get 3 boxes and label them,
1. Elsewhere
2. Dump
3. Repair/Donate.

At the end of each session, immediately dump what's in box # 2.
Sort the items in box # 1 by quickly depositing them in whichever room they belong, but don't start organizing them in that room, you're just removing them from the room you're currently working on.
Designate somewhere to keep items for repair and bag up items to donate and immediately place by the front door or in your car to drop off at a charity shop next time you're out.

I used to keep changes of bedlinen for all 3 bedrooms on the top shelf of my wardrobe. A little while ago I moved DS's into his bedroom closet. Today I moved bedding for the spare-room into the spare-room closet Smile

I like the bra organizing , Skin!
well, we took all the junk out of our bedroom...and cleaned it...so it is kinda done...now I get to do the nitty gritty organixing that hasn't been done in 8 years! YIKES!! I am also going to devote time this month to making my bedroom look how I WANT it to! By making nice things, and having all my junk put away...to not use it as a closet! Good luck to all!!

How about purses? how do you all store your purses? My DD is a purse-a-holic & I would like to have a place (in her bedroom, of course) that they can all be seen & readily available when she wants them. Any ideas?
TIA!!!

I want to do my room but dh keeps piling stuff up everywhere, I throw all his stuff into a drawer and when it fills I make him go thru it. Several months ago I filled a box, he went thru it, put the stuff back in the box and it still sits on our cedar chest. I can do my stuff but he is bad!

Vicki I know what you mean, when I tidy our bedroom I place EVERYTHING that DH has left on his bedside drawers into an open wicker basket that I set on the floor beside it. At least the top of the drawers is tidy. What's in his bedside drawers is his mess, he can go through it, same with the basket. He rarely puts things away, dumps shoes everywhere (bedroom, living room, bathroom) and clothes too.....*biting my tongue pull hair * We each have our own laundry basket but the items just get dropped on the floor or pile up over his end of the bed until I sort them! DH gives off to DS for being messy but it's kind of the pot calling the kettle black....not sure how to resolve this 'issue'...lol.
I'm planning on putting a rolling plastic crate below DH's side of the bed for easy access for shoes, I know he won't use the shoe-rack in the wardrobe so am going to get rid of it. I use a hanging canvas shelving system for my shoes, it's not very wide so doesn't use up much hanging space.
It's all well and good recommending shoe-racks but when someone is too lazy or disorganized to use them....what's the point? Rolling Eyes

Cheapy, how about using one of those expanding wall-mountable mug racks (the accordian type I mentioned before, usually wooden), they'd be handy for displaying and sorting bags?
Oh, should've clarified first, when you say purse...do you mean a coin-purse or an actual bag? Where I'm from a purse is to carry money and your purse goes into your bag...lol.

Skin..I love that!! Ash would use one of them for all her "purses"..thanks!

Today I found a LONG pillow case my Grandmother made...she just sewed a long tube of cream fabric..sewed lace on the ends...and embriodered flowers at each end...so I pressed it, filled it with 3 extra pillows ( wich were thrown on a table in my room) and put it on top of a pretty quilt I put on top of my bed Smile I need to go through drawers, label drawers, go through and organize pictures..organize fabrics...move the game shelf out...WHEWW...I sure am glad we have a whole month.!!

Cheapy...when I had teen girls we just hung hooks up on the back of thier door to hand thier purses...we had an open door rule (except for privite times...changing)...so they were rarely seen or looked messy. Just an idea...we got the accordian style ones to match the rooms at the dollar store.

The accordion style racks are also good to use to hang necklaces and bracelets from. These are great for just about anything!

Rachel uses an old duffel bag to keep her purses in.

I love the shoe box idea. It just so happened that I had 2 from lil Darin's new shoes so I took them downstairs and put them to use. My dresser drawers are so nice and neat. I used one for bras and the other one for underwear. They sist side by side and then in the open spot I stacked my socks. Looks very nice and neat and easy to find everything. I cleaned out and organized my dresser, Dh's dresser and our cedar chest. That is all that is technically in our room.

Skin - I might just get DH a wicker basket to set under his nightstand to keep all his junk in. That is a great idea!! Your dh sounds alot like mine!

Guess I will move on to my laundry room which is downstairs next to my bedroom and that is where our clothes hang. It will probably take me a month in there!! LOL. I also have a little work/sitting area (old homeschool room) downstairs with our bedroom which I guess you would consider part of our bedroom also. Actually the whole downstairs which was meant to be a guess a family room and laundry room is mine and dh's bedroom.

Thanks for your ideas everyone!!

Yes, skin, you're right...here they are called bag heres too...though sometimes called purses. A change purse, is called a change purse~ Wink heehee!!

My DD is such a purse-NUT~ Rolling Eyes She doesn't need them all, and yet won't give any of 'em up. Where did my girls come from? scratch I am the opposite...I rarely form an extreme attatchment to any material thing. If I do, most of the time it's short-lived and it's gone within a year or two.

I am in the process of de-cluttering yet again. I don't have major clutter issues, but we all have "stuff", don't we?~ Wink

Good job everyone, I am finding all your ideas very inspiring. I too am sorting and organizing, but I have had to start in different areas of the house. I am taking notes though up in my head. ***Note to self....organize clutter in my head !!!*** Laughing
