| 1..Put the items you need on the rightside of your cart. When was the last time you went to the store just to buy bread and came home with bags and bags. Most stores know mainly shoppers are looking for basics,,such as bread butter milk eggs etc. This is why some spread the basics all over the store, this way you walk past items that tempt you on your way to get the other basics on the list.By placing items on the right side,,when you checkout you can see what "extras" you have bought and decide then if you truly need them . 2.Easy Reach shopping Retailers know items on the shelf that is eye level to most people are the best selling. Some retailers have paid extra to the store to have their item on that shelf. That extra payment tends to "up "the price on that item.Next time you shop look at items on the lower of higher shelves,,alot of the times theres the same version of that item at a better price. 3.Price checking at the checkout Everyone is human and everyone can make mistakes,,especially on sale items.Try watching as items get scanned to make sure the price is correct when checking out. 4.Buying non grocery items Buying plants,,batteries toasters pots and pans etc.at the grocery isnt always cheaper than other specialty stores.Sometimes these items cost a little more because of "convience". 5.Shop the bakery last Smelling fresh baked read has been known to trigger senses and make you hungry.Never shop hungry, hunger makes you want to buy everything. I saw these tips on a dollar stretching site,,thought they were pretty good,,I havent tried the placing basic needs to one part of the cart,,gonna try it next time we shop to see if we do buy alot of impulse type things. |

| Thanks for the reminders Donna, I'd read something similar which suggested placing a shopping basket inside the trolley and placing impulse purchasing separately into that...same idea really.
With regards to #3, the supermarket chains here have a policy whereby if you are charged incorrectly at the checkout, they refund the money for that item plus you get to keep the item for free. This has happened to us a few times.
With regards to #4, it does pay to check out the prices of non-food items in the grocery store from time to time as I've found some great deals on bedding, tea-towels etc...even socks and undies. I suppose if you have a general idea of what items cost at various places you know a good (or bad) deal when you see one. _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| I agree with Skin on #4....I bought a large skillet at Safeway at 40% off and have found books at 75% to 90% off, as well as the damaged packaging markdowns where I have gotten tea towels as well, and socks for my daughter under $1... _________________ Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand. | | I can add to #5. Dh and I shop after either breakfast or supper. I ususally just want to get what's on our lists and run out of the store. We're too full to want to look at food. |
