http://www.essortment.com/hobbies/howmakeliquid_sivk.htm

I'm going to try this next week and compare quality and cost with store bought. I've been using liquid soap both in the bathroom and kitchen for a while now as I got sick of cleaning up soap-gunk because no-one could be bothered to put the bar of soap back in it's holder! Evil or Very Mad
Using the pump bottles of liquid soap has made a big difference...no more mess cheers
I purchased two nice pump bottles and fill them with storebrand, which is quite cheap but it'll be interesting to see what this works out at and if it's worth making! scratch

I will be wait to see how this comes out Skin I buy a huge bottle of soup at Walmart and refill my small bottles. I wonder if it would be cheaper to make your own .

Well, I rechecked the price of the homebrand liquid soap refill while doing my fortnightly shop...$1.69 (Aus) for a 500ml bottle...still much cheaper than other brands!
I bought an 8pk (100g each bar) of homebrand 'pure' soap for $1.99 (that's .25c per bar) and I'm going to try out 1 bar initially to see how it goes, all I need to add is water to make it equivalent to what I've been buying....except I also bought a 100ml bottle of tea-tree oil so I could turn it into an anti-bacterial handwash. I will only need perhaps a capful or less for the amount I'll be trying so it won't add too much to the cost. I did not buy glycerine as there is already some in the ingredients of the soap bar!
I'll let you know how it turns out....or NOT.... laugh

I was telling a friend about trying this, she was pleased, she's in the midst of making her own tote bag from recycled plastic breadbags. She's going to show it to me when she's finished. She's also made a 5 minute video for a competition run through work for employees to show how environmentally friendly they are at home. She has chickens, a veggie patch, new water tanks, buys all her clothing from thrift stores...does lots of crafts...is very into recycling...and more...her DH was cameraman...she (and one of her chickens starred) and her son edited it...I can't wait to see it Smile She has also loaned a book to me which I'm reading my way through, it's titled 'Affluenza'...very interesting.
She's a great friend to share ideas with, she really encourages me in my frugal endeavours! Very Happy

Okay, I've finished my first attempt Rolling Eyes

I grated 1 x 100g bar of pure soap, boiled 2 cups of water and added the grated soap. It started to clump together a little in the hot water but after stirring over a few minutes it gradually began to dissolve again! I poured it into a plastic jug through a strainer and flattened out any little remaining lumps in the strainer with a fork. This yielded me 500ml which exactly filled my empty 'refill' bottle. As it cooled down I added some tea-tree oil for anti-bacterial qualities. It seemed runnier than store-bought liquid soap but appeared to thicken up some as it was cooling. I'll see how much it thickens up after cooling totally, if I want to make it thicker next time I might try 2 x bars of soap with the same amount of water.
It probably took me 5-10 minutes from start to finish but worth it compared to the time I used to spend cleaning up soap-gunk from bars of soap around the basins!

Store's homebrand liquid soap refill bottle x 500ml - $1.69 ($1.48 U.S.)

Home made liquid soap (adding tea-tree oil) 500ml - .45cents (.40c U.S.)
(this was using 1 x 100g bar of soap).

If I tried it using 2 bars it would be .70cents (.61c U.S.)

To purchase ready-made namebrand products is a fair bit more expensive again!!!

1 bar of soap ,,grated up and 2 cups of water boiled,,add together in dispensar and you added tea tree oil for antibacterial solution.Right?
Where did you get the tea tree oil,at a health store or a regular grocery store.
Id love to try this also,,thanks for posting this.

I just use about 1/2 an inch of liquid soap (dish soap) in a foaming hand soap dispenser and gently fill the rest up with water and use....REALLY simple and cheap Smile

SKin....that's neat that you tried that...I can't say that I would have done it...LOL...I'm lazy I guess...LOL

Skin - this is great to know. If I ever run out I will have to try this. The girls gave me 5 bottles of liquid soap from bath and body for mother's day and I add water to make them last so it may be a while

affraid YIKES!!! affraid DISASTER affraid

Well, I must confess, I got home from work this morning and after my first attempt had cooled down it had kind of solidified again Shocked
I warmed the bottle of soap up in the microwave, poured it into a saucepan and added another 2 x cups of water, my best guess is the soap to water ratio is wrong although I thought I was being generous with the instructions (I have looked at various instructions and the added water quantity varies greatly scratch ).
I now have 1 litre for .45cents (Aus).
I'm expecting a little more trial and error with this initial batch. I may have to add even more water, well see how this batch cools down, I'm determined to see it through! This might turn out to be fantastic value Razz
Watch this space...I will update...fail or succeed! Laughing

Donna, I can buy teatree, lavendar & eucalyptus oil in the supermarket here, they're usually stored with tablets/bandaids etc...I've also seen them in pharmacies.

Okay...we're looking good this time around cheers

I now have 1 litre of liquid soap for .45c (Aus)...40c (U.S.)

That gives me 500ml for a little over .20cents...that's good value to me! Very Happy

Next time I'm going to try 3 cups of water to 1 bar of soap...maybe get a happy medium Razz
