I really believe in gifts like these for children. I know I was thankful (when I turned 18 ) that I got Savings Bonds while growing up.

| when we got married my Dad gave me all the saving bonds he had brought ... a nice surprize we buy each child a bond once a month and now our Grandchildren and my DH buys me one a month for every month ... it isnt much but it is a small nest egg for me.. _________________ Gayla

| That's what I love about Savings Bonds. You buy them at half the face value, and forget about them for years. :-) Then when you really need them, you can cash them in.

| | I think Savings Bonds are a great idea for kids but unfortunately every one I've given has been cashed in by their parents without benefitting the child so I don't give them anymore. |

| Oh my goodness... I just went online to find out how much my savings bonds are worth. I have one that I have kept because of sentimental value (it was given to me when I was 3 months old). It is a $50 savings bond from my grandfather.
Mind you, he paid $25.00 for it in 1981. It is now worth $245! I am going to keep it until I cant keep it anymore (when I am 30), but how great is that? It quadroupled (spelling?) in value.
I am sorry you havent had a good experience with giving Bonds, Dancing Feather. What about keeping them in your own safety deposit box until the child turns 18. What greater gift (and they didnt even know they had) at the age of 18?
I am thinking about doing this for Natalie. She has her own Savings Account as of last week, but I am thinking about purchasing some bonds for her just as my aunts/uncles/grandparents did for me.

| PayDay sounds like a wonderful gift for Elizabeth!! I've heard of it before(it's obviously been around since I was a kid!),but just never thought of getting it for any of my kids! Also, there's a piggy bank that has three sections in it...one for saving, one for charity, and one for spending that is available for kids. And something called a Cash Cache for teens & pre-teens,which is more of a zippered binder notebook with money info(?),calculator, etc. in it. I thought I was going to get those for the girls this year, but I never did. In light of my recent trip, I don't want to put anything else on a CC. Even though my trip was paid in full, there are still some incidentals on the card from DURING the trip. Plus, it's SO hard to get my girls organized ,it's a constant battle with them~
Thanks for the link, m!!! It's definitely food for thought with some good ideas!! |
