| I heard a medical report on TV that was about an ongoing scientific study that has shown that regular exercise can affect cellular growth and thus extend life by more than a few years....the study involved elderly people in their 70s and older, but am thinking getting a head start at a younger age couldn't hurt providing one has the ok of his/her doctor.... _________________ Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand. | | I agree with this. Exercise not only makes me feel physically better, but mentally and emotionally better. There's nothing like a good brisk walk to clear my head and help me solve problems or just take time to decompress. I know there are studies that show weight bearing exercises help to slow down bone loss. |

| You're so right Sissy, I think the mental and emotional benefits are underrated.....I walk short distances with my daughter for her exercise, I walk my dog for his exercise, and then I walk myself for ME....a time I have grown to need very much....I keep telling my husband I can fit him for a walk also but so far have met with resistance...will keep on working on him _________________ Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand. | | I don't have problems getting my dh to walk with me. He's trying to lose some weight and wants to walk even more this summer. It's really fun because there are people who sit on their porches almost every night. We've gotten to know them over the years and stop and chat with them. It's amazing how many people we've met by walking around the neighborhood. |

| You know, when we do stress test at work,we walk patients on a treadmill,Every 3 minutes the treadmill goes a little higher and a little faster. This is what gets the heart rate up.It depends on age on what heart rate you want to get to,,but someone that in the early 40s..we would try to reach 140 beats or so. The longer it takes to get the rate up ,,means the more you have to walk,,,some patients would complain about that,,but really,,thats a good sign to be able to walk and walk with out your rate jumping up so high in the first few minutes! |

| Sissy, that is so good your husband is willing to walk with you....it is true the benefits go beyond just the physical exercise part...my husband has so many physical challenges that I know could be helped by exercise but gets very upset if I even gently push him to walk with me. So I guess all I can do at the moment is continue what I am doing for myself and be a good example for him... _________________ Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand. | Spirit, is there someone who could intervene for you and talk to your husband, someone whose opinion he trusts? What does the doctor say? Sometimes people are afraid to exercise because they think they're going to get hurt or they will fail in trying.
I wish you luck and my prayers are with you. |

| I do not walk, but want to start again. I have always been overweight. In high school, I started to walk every day around a track in our allotment. I would do at least a mile a day. On rainy days or in the winter, I would do step aeorbics. I had lost 30 lbs. The key was that I did something EVERY day. Well, that fell to the wayside after the divorce of my parents, moving, stress, angst, college, etc. I would love to start again. I would prefer to do it in the morning, but when I get up, the sun isnt even out yet. In High School, I did it after I ate dinner, every night. Maybe I should start doing that. Possibly train Squiggy on his harness and leash, and take him out for walks. I may be doing more "waiting" for him to eat stuff off the ground and chewing the grass, but at least it's something! :-) I need to keep piggy lean! Not to mention, I need to get ready for our hiking in the Smoky Mountains in another month and a half. ~M _________________ "It is not how much money you make - it is how you spend it."

| Well, it is almost 6 AM, and there are no dogs out that could get Squiggy. So, I took him for a walk down the street, and he did really well! He DID have to sniff EVERYTHING on our way, but he still didnt give me any problems when coming back home. He stayed right at my side like a dog does. I am thinking maybe we'll go a little further every day. I should try to train him on his harness.
Todd and I have a little joke about Sneakers for Squiggy, because his hooves slip on the floors. Todd was talking about making some for pot bellied pigs. We'd call them "Squeekers" for Squiggy Sneakers. :-)

| Well Sissy, my husband knows he needs to exercise...doctors of course tell him this, and it is true it is hard for him because of several previous knee surgeries and asthma...I just hope that he will decide to just give it a try and take baby steps so to speak.... _________________ Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand.
