PostSubject: A numbing experience...   Sun 06 Apr 2008, 10:22 am

I think I have mentioned that I have a nerve problem in both of my feet...well it has progressed to the point where I have both pain and numbness now...something I didn't realize could happen at the same time Shocked I was afraid that this would keep me from power walking which has become very important to me and I was getting to the point where I wanted to try gentle running....the doctor who did a recent EMG test to determine nerve damage told me to go ahead and try running and showed me a particular nerve point just behind my knees and told me that if that started to hurt, then back off on the running. Anyway I have been walk/running for 3 days now (not consecutively, lol) and although it is wierd to run on numb feet(it feels like I am wearing bread loaves on my feet),I am adjusting and it feels great to be able to do this and have an understanding medical team bounce

That must feel really strange spirit, I hope it's not causing too much pain to prevent you from the exercising you're obviously enjoying. Any reason behind it other than nerves and can anything be done to remedy it? Please be careful. Smile

Yes Skin, it is a strange and frustrating problem....there is pain but if I exercise before late afternoon, the pain does not keep me from walking or running, and I am on some strong pain meds. The problem is nerve damage in my feet and it is progressing but slowly so at this point they can't do anything but control the pain. I will be seeing my neurologist soon but for the time being they are encouraging me to continue to exercise because it seems to control my high blood pressure better than medication. They tell me that exercise will not speed up the progression of the nerve damage so I want to do this as long as I can and if and when I can't I will switch to some kind of non weight bearing exercise. So it is a bit of a mystery I'm afraid....

I know you understand the pain Gayla....it is indeed a nasty burning pain like it might feel if you stuck your feet in a hot oven and could not take them out...I also get a real sharp stabbing pain occasionally that makes me jump and yell....rather annoying there is supposedly a 24 or 48 hour urine test that they want me to do which might help explain my problem so will be doing that soon...again I am so very grateful for the Denver VA Hospital.....

Sounds like you are getting some great care, Gayla...I have never been crazy about taking meds but am sure grateful now for pain meds...I just started a new one...the starting dose did nothing but my Doctor doubled it a week ago and it is actually working better....the pain is still there but toned down a few notches so I can move around better at night and can even walk normally first thing in the morning...what a relief cheers

Spirit, I'm so sorry for your pain. Please be careful. How can you feel the ground if your feet are numb? Aren't you afraid of falling?

Spirit I am glad you are able to exercise like you want and that is doesn't make the progression faster. I feel for you ladies who suffer with pain on a daily basis.

Sissy, it is hard to explain but I can walk even with numbness...it has not affected my whole feet yet...I can still feel the parts from the base of my big toes on back to my heels....I can move the toes, just can't feel it if I touch them...I am discovering that nerve challenges can be very weird...one of my doctors calls it like having short circuits in my feet and legs....and as far as falling, I am very careful, especially going down hill...
Vicki, yes I am very grateful to keep exercising on the hills and hope to do so as long as possible Cool
