| Great ideas.
I dont know if everyone has these, but there is a TV show here in NorthEast Ohio called "one tank trips." They actually have books out and everything. It will show you the best places to go on one tank of gas ... to feel like you went away, but local.
One tank of gas will get Todd and I a round trip to: Pittsburgh, Wheeling, WV, Upstate NY (Seneca), Cleveland (I work about 25 miles from Cleveland, I could do that easily on 1/4 tank of gas), Put-In-Bay. One tank of gas cost: $40.
I am pondering the possibilities for our next vacation "extended weekend vacation" or "vacation for the day."

| Our local newspaper ran a contest back in the 70's when there was a gas shortage about one day trips. My father submitted an article and won a free tank of gas. We have the picture of him standing at the pump putting gas in his car.
One of the reasons I go to the Abbey on retreat is because it's only an hour and a half from my house. I get three meals a day, a room and peace and quiet for a minimum donation.
I actually would just like a week where I could stay at home. Right now, that would be the best vacation. |

| What's nice, too is how people were kind of "pretending" to go away, like camping out in their living room...or like the woman who cancelled her trip to Japan did; eat Japanese food, purchase & send Japanese postcards to friends & family, take in Japanese cultural events & activities that were in her city, etc. Sounds fun! Maybe we'll go to "Italy"-Heehee Boston has a great "little Italy' in the North End...we could have lunch at an Italian restaurant, eat Italian dessert specialties, explore stores in that neighborhood that sell Italian foods or goods, visit churches, perhaps go to an Italian festival, etc. _________________

| That's a great idea, Cheapy! Come to think of it, there is a "little Italy" in Cleveland as well. That woudl be a great day-cation for us. ~M _________________ "It is not how much money you make - it is how you spend it."

| How about China (or "chinatown" in this case!)!!
I did that once when my kids were little, it was really fun. We ate at chinese restaurant & walked around looking at the local shops (with the chickens hanging in the windows & everything)...and stopped to shop for some inexpensive chinese trinkets at one point. I got some ceramic chinese soup spoons for like a quarter a piece which I still have & use...I think my two boys who were young each got a cool chinese dragon-type mask to hang in their room (maybe $1 a piece) & I got some little flat black chinese maryjane-type shoes for my daughter. It was a fun day & my kids got to experience another culture only 30 minutes away from where we live! _________________

| We have the one tank trips featured occasionly on our local news station....we are very lucky here....we can explore the plains as well as the mountains on one tank....lots of Native American and pioneer history, real ghost towns, gold mining, the Molly Brown House ( she survived the Titantic!), and tons of free or low cost musical events. One event we may escape from is the upcoming National Democratic Convention - my imagination is working overtime with scary scenarios concerning terrorist attacks, out of control security and protests.... we are hoping it is not too late to find a reasonably priced pet friendly motel in the foot hills _________________ Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand.
