This is the original recipe from WW1.

4 cups plain flour
1½ tsp salt
½ tsp butter (yes, just 1/2 t. - not a typo)
4 tsp baking powder
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg
¼ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg

Put flour in shallow pan, add salt, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar.

Rub in butter with fingertips.

Add the well beaten egg and milk and stir thoroughly.

Toss on floured board, roll to one-fourth inch in thickness, cut, fry, and drain.

Makes about 2 dozen, more or less, depending on how thick and big you make them.

How interesting...I love these old recipes. My Grandfather (my Mom's dad) was an ambulance driver overseas during WWI and he loved doughnuts. I wonder if he ate any of these?

These sound real yummy. I was just thinking about making donuts but I was going to do it the easy way by using canned biscuits.
