I have a list, but haven't even looked at it in awhile. I'm trying to figure out what to do at our church this year. I'm hoping we find out soon what's going to happen to our church and if we will have a church to go to this summer or if we will be kept open and merged with the other churches in our area.

Todd was nice enough to stop by the other house after work and bring home our potting soil.
I can start planting seeds tomorrow morning. Yippee!!

Gayla,
Where do you get your lids?
And how much are they normally?

I have many, many dozen canning jars from freecycle, but when I was looking at prices of lids, it looked like they were nearly $12/dozen. I was thinking the lids would have been alot cheaper than that.

I don't know where each of you are at, but be careful starting seeds so early. They will grow like crazy if sat in a humid area...they will also grow really tall and skinny...if planted outside by the seed this will not happen...when you transplant them into your garden outside if they are too tall and lanky any weather will kill them. I know it's exciting...we 've lost many plants in the years past due to jumping the gun!

Kim,
Where do you get your lids and rings from?
How much do you pay for them?
Walmart.com is at $12 for a dozeon lids and rings. I think that's redicules.

I found this website, and I am looking forward to keeping up each month with this blog.

http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2008/01/06/year-long-grs-project-how-much-does-a-garden-really-save/

It compares how much you get from your garden versus how much you spend on your garden.

Thank you, Vicki.
I found them at Dollar General for $1.00/dozen.
I have enough rings (for free from freecycle) for the lids, I just needed the lids.

I looked on ebay, and they were expensive.
I ended up getting the lids for $0.08 each!
Everywhere else I saw was $0.25 each! A pretty big difference in price.

I am now thinking about growing some green beans and strawberries to can. I've got 9 dozen lids - that is 108 mason jars that can be filled with veggies/fruits from the garden.
My goal is to have enough to be able to can at least 50 jars this year.

Thank you for looking into this for me, Vicki. I appreciate it.

No, I have never canned before.
But I have been doing some research online.
Mom has the equipment that I'm going to borrow.
I've got some recipes for green beans, stewed tomatoes, spaghetti sauce (thanks to a fru-gal friend).
I have at least 15 dozen jars from freecycle to can with. I want to use them all, but thought I'd try to do just 50 jars to see how it goes. Then, I'll know more for next year.

Do you have any tips for me?
I will take in whatever information you have...or any books your recommend.
I'm also thinking about getting some books from the library.

I was going to start the seeds yesterday, but we had a really bad ice storm. I want to make sure we have enough sunlight and warmth in the windowsil. I may ask for a greenhouse for the next holiday (Christmas). :-) I see they are $100 at WalMart.
