PostSubject: learning to make a doll   Wed 25 Apr 2007, 5:14 am

I am trying to learn how to make a doll for Ashley. I will make her one...if she likes it I will make her a "family" of dolls for Christmas. We are also going to AC More store and buying the kids unfinished toy boxes will router their names, put a pretty decal and stain and polyurithane them...I hope to fill hers up with new doll stuff...all homemade.

Those toyboxes will be wonderful keepsakes as they get older kim.
What type of doll are you going to make? Like a ragdoll? Are you working from a pattern?

That is a great idea Kim...I love homemade gifts and I am sure your kids cherish them knowing the love you made them with.

Thanks ladies! I hope the kids like them. I am hoping to make cloth dolls, like rag dolls. I am looking for the perfect pattern. If I can't find an easy one I will just go at it on my own. It can't be that hard..LOL...we'll see Smile I have thought that before. That things would not be hard, and sure enough they were hard! LOL

These are wonderful gift ideas Kim and I know that your sweet kids are going to love them! My Mom still has Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that her Mother made for her when she was a little girl. I love rag dolls because they are so huggable!

Well, I made Ashley her doll....it turned out SOOO cute! I made the doll out of off white fabric from a table runner that was her Great Grandma's....it had a stain...and the dress from light pink flowered material,,,the apron out of the same material I made the doll from...and the doll is face-less...like the Amish dolls are! BUT...she doesn't play with it...so I don't think I am going to make her the dolls for Christmas unless she starts to play with it more...I would not want to put all that work into it for nothing, ya know?
Thanks for all the kind words!

Thats a very creative and smart way to look at it..maybe ask her what she would want on the doll in order to play with it more,,maybe yarn hair,,or longer hait or cartoon character aprons,,lol,,I like to do crafts with my grandkids,,I was thinking of making little aprons for them with their own names on them so they can wear them when they help in the kitchen.

I know its early,,but I do love preparing and getting ready for Christmas!

That sounds lovely kim, great job, it sounds like you enjoyed making it too. Maybe you should let Ashley help in creating part of the outfit??? Perhaps a hat or adding a few small embellishments....she'd feel more attached to it maybe???

I know exactly what you mean Donna about preparing and getting ready early....it helps alleviate getting stressed in the rush at that time of year. Plus it gives more time to look around for bargains and get ideas or allows time to make homemade gifts. It also allows more time to actually enjoy the season and what it's about. My neighbour, her daughters and I have decided to go on the Christmas Lights tour this year...I love driving around looking at the houses after dark. They run a special bus-tour in the evenings ($16 I believe, including tea & light refreshment) that drives around all the homes that have entered the yearly Christmas Lights competition....some are just amazing, like winter wonderlands (even in this tropical heat at Christmas!)....I just love them, I'm just a big kid at heart I love you

Donna, people walk around here at Christmas in shorts and t-shirts...still sweating!!!
It seems pretty weird to me still, coming from Ireland where it often snowed at Christmas....two complete opposites which I'm still not used to.
2 Christmases back a house around the corner had their entire front garden covered in something like cotton wool to look like snow, it looked fab at night with all their light displays....
They also had a large trestle table set out the front in the evenings with some nibblies for the bus-tours....lol
Someone from the house also dressed as Santa and gave lollies to children visiting with parents...I just love the whole spirit of Christmas!

Ladies you amaze me. I wish I could get started early but my poor brain is fried. I can't think of what to make for anyone as we all have everything we need

Kim - dont' worry about your daughter not playing with the doll now. I made my two nieces Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for Christmas one year. The one niece doesn't play with them at all, but the other one does. My SIL says she prefers that they DON'T play with them, because that will keep them nice and in good condition. She considers the dolls a nice keepsake.
