| I started into that but I found it to be more expensive than I thought because you needed this tool and that one to do this and that and then the beads weren't cheaper either. _________________ Vicki

| I really want to learn how to make beaded jewellery so I can make unique gifts to give to my family for presents. They sell a little tool kit for under $20 at my previous place of employment which has hopefully all the tools I'd require, I've brought home a few books from the library but didn't find them very helpful. I think I'd need (& prefer) to go to a class although I know that may be expensive but I'm sure I'd get hours of creative enjoyment out of it afterwards. _________________ ~ By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. --Agesilaus ~ |

| I have made jewelry before and sold it for awhile. A store like Michael's will have your supplies that you need. I use to shop at a bead store which was fun because they had so many different pretty beads, but you can sink a lot of money into this hobby if you aren't careful. Good jewelry in the stores is very expensive though and people love handmade pieces for gifts. _________________ MARY |

| | Michael's and AC Moore both offer classes in jewelry making. Some cost $ and some don't. They usually have a calendar printed up by the door. This month at my local store, they have 5-6 free classes and this includes materials. They are sponsored by the products themselves and conducted by vendor reps. Once you learn a few teqniques you can use beads from costume jewelry that you pick up from yard sales and such. I have a friend that uses fishing line instead of the more expensive stringing threads. |

| It is really fun to use vintage beads. One time someone gave me a whole bag of old jewelry and I got the most fantastic glass beads! _________________ MARY |

| I tried this hobby with my girls a year ago....and yes, I did "sink" some $$$ into it (bead magazines to get instructions & ideas from, all the colors of beads from which my girls could pick from, tools, beading wires & strings, clasps, spacer beads, etc.). We made a few pairs of earrings(they're the easiest), a bracelet or two, and a couple of beaded pull-chains for lights(those are easy, too as well as keyshains) however, we haven't had time to make everything we've wanted to. Anyway,my girls and I continually got frustrated with the hobby because I'm sure practice makes perfect, and we just don't have time to lay everything out & design and put stuff together. It would be nice to have a space, well lighted, just to keep the stuff out ready & waiting. I still have a bunch of stuff that I'm hanging onto in case we ever get "inspired" ,but I refuse to buy anymore. There are SO many pretty beads!! I guess I'm also just lazy, I like to wear proffessionally-done chunky charm bracelets done by someone who knows what they're doing....and that wouldn't be me!!! I agree about finding old beads & such from yard sales...that could be really fun, I could just imagine!! AND start small, like with earrings, and/or keychains, just to get used to creating with the beads and beading materials and tools. Good Luck!!! |
